"Teufels Waschbecken" wird der Strudeltopf bei den Anwohnern genannt.
"Das heutige Relief des Elbsandsteingebirges ist vor allem das Ergebnis von Verwitterungsprozessen und der Tätigkeit des fließenden Wassers. Das Ausgangsmaterial ist der vor ca. 100 Millionen Jahren abgelagerte Sandstein. An manchen Stellen gibt es Strudeltöpfe, auch Kolke genannt. Das sind kessel- oder trichterförmige Vertiefungen im Gestein. Sie bilden sich in schnell fließenden Flüssen an Stellen, wo ein Hindernis das Wasser zu einer drehenden Bewegung zwingt.
Das geschieht mit Mahlsteinen und Sanden, die der Fluss von weiter aufwärts heran transportiert hat. Diese schleifen den Felsgrund aus.
Die Entstehunbgstheorie für den Strudeltopf im Zscherregrund
Der hier stehende Strudeltopf ist wahrscheinlich am Ende der letzten Eiszeit, also vor rund 10.000 - 15.000 Jahren entstanden. Dafür sprechen mehrere Gründe:
1. Der Fluss, der diesen Grund mit seinem Kolk geformt hat, existiert nicht mehr. Heute, wo der Niederschlag nahezu vollständig im porösen Sandstein versickert, gibt es deutlich weniger Flüsse und Bäche im Elbsandsteingebirge.
2. Damit des Wasser auf einem porösen Gestein oberflächlich abfließen kann, muss der Boden dauerhaft gefroren sein (Permafrost), so wie in Eiszeiten. Gleichzeitig muss aber der Niederschlag überwiegend als Regen fallen und der winterliche Schnee komplett schmelzen. Dies ist am Ende einer Eiszeit der Fall, wenn sich das Klima wieder erwärmt, aber der Permafrost noch erhalten ist.
3. Da der Kolk so gut erhalten ist, kann er sich nicht zu einer der vorangegangenen Eiszeiten gebildet haben, aus den beiden ersten Gründen aber auch nicht später."
