The plaque relates the story of the early attempts at iron ore smelting in this area.
An Irishman by the name of Charles Hayes built the first crude smelter near here in 1823. He smelted pig iron from the iron ore found north of here near the present day town of Blairton. However, financial and transportation difficulties doomed the enterprise, despite repeated attempts and ensuring its viability.
The smelter was shut down in 1837, though there were attempts in 1848 and a period of operation in the late 1860's before the operation was shuttered for good in 1873.
Today the concrete foundations are still evident along the river. There is also a restored display of some of the machinery required for the smelter.
