Malt is one of the ingredients of beer and produced from cereal grain. The malt is produced by soaking the grain for a couple of days causing it to swell and increase bulk by 25%.

Traditionally after this process the grain was dried and piled 12 – 16 inches high on wooden boards. This generated heat and caused the grain to germinate.

During this process the grain was turned regularly with wooden shovels of the type shown on the sign.

There has been a pub called The Malt Shovel on this site since at least 1836 when the Halifax to London mail coach service started.
