National Road 1 goes around the island, from the capital city, São Tomé, to the north, until it comes to a halt in a point where the jungle basically swallowed the asphalt. This milestone is a heritage of the Portuguese times (1495-1975), being manufactured in stone, as were all the road marks in the Portuguese mainland.
