"Trierced per pale, Azure, Argent and Gules." (from Flags of the World)

Although this looks exactly like the flag of France this is the official flag of the Swiss municipality Gelterkinden and much older. It used to be the coat of arms of the "von Gelterkinden", a subordinate family of the local authority "von Froburg". It was first documented in 1227 while the French Tricolour was not seen before 1790.

While almost all Swiss flags are a square, the flag of Gelterkinden is often seen in the proportions 2:3. This is most probably not entirely correct and just a side effect of lower prices in mass produced French flags.

I found this flag at a house at Marktgasse in Gelterkinden just opposite to the town hall.
