Drury S. Godsey
1829-1897
One mile north on Highway No. 671 stood the home of Drury S. Godsey, a Confederate veteran. In his home was established Big Branch post office March 1, 1872. He was for 16 years its postmaster. During this time he carried the mail from Estillville (now Gate City) to Big Branch post office for 25 cents per day and from Big Branch post office to Collingwood post office in Russell County for 50 cents per day. In February 1889 the post office was moved. The name was changed to Snowflake from November 1, 1889 to February 26, 1892.

This marker is seen along Highway VA71. Plenty of pull-off space.

The 25 to 50 cents earned in 1889 would be roughly equivalent to $30-60 today.
