In 14 miles the Everitt Memorial Highway extends from I-5 (3600 feet) to the 7800-foot level on the south side of Mt. Shasta, where the Old Ski Bowl trailhead and view point are located. A ski area was established at this location in 1959 but the area was destroyed in 1978 by a huge avalanche. Today the old parking lots serve trails, picnic sites and the highest viewpoint on Mt. Shata that is accessible by autos.
