The Salvation Army arrived in Salem in the early 1890s, becoming recognized as a leader in the push for prison reform and in charitable activities such as feeding the hungry and visiting the sick and elderly. This building served as the Salvation Army's Salem headquarters from 1930 to 1968. A reference to its use can be seen by the "erased" engraving at the top of the building's front.
Today, the primary Salvation Army location for the area is the Ray & Joan Kroc Center in northeast Salem.
