A brochure provided at the Inn -- today, a bed and breakfast -- refers to the infant as "Clarence Stewart," a little different from what's on the headstone. The brochure indicates that there was once a hotel nearby, and a family stayed there during an 1890 visit. Mother and child came down with typhoid, and were taken in at Rutland (the original name of the Mountain Magnolia Inn) by the original owners. The baby died, and the mother was forced to watch the funeral from a window, upstairs in the mansion.
There was once an Episcopal chapel here, built by Colonel James H. Rumbough for his wife, Carrie, and just a few feet from Clarence's grave are all that remains, a stairway. This is the lone grave on the grounds.
