Built due to a donation from Andrew Carnegie, this Classical Revival style building was designed by local architect John Donahue and built by local craftsmen.

This website gives some history about this building. Andrew Carnegie, in 1905, donated $260,000 to Springfield, MA for a main library and three branches. Today, this figure would be worth around $14.5M. The library opened in 1909 and has been in continuous service ever since.
