This small area within Crescent City Harbor is full of memorial plaques dedicated to citizens and fishermen of Crescent City. This particular area grabs one's attention with the nautical flag pole that invites visitors to pause and reflect on those fishermen who lost their lives at sea over the decades. One marble plaque is monumented in the concrete and aggregate pathway that surrounds the nautical pole and says the following words:
WE THE COMMERCIAL FISHERMENS WIVES DEDICATE THIS MEMORIAL TO OUR COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES AT SEA.
Underneath the quote is a long list of lost lives at sea beginning in 1946 and ending in 1995. The plaque was dedicated in 1971.
The second marble plaque stands to the left of the nautical pole and says the following:
DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS THEY GO. THOSE CHOSEN MEN OF STEEL THE SEA MAY OWN THEIR WINDBURNED FLESH BUT THEIR SOULS BELONG TO GOD.
There are the names of four individuals under the quote of men who also lost their lives at sea. The scene overall is very serene especially on a quiet evening, which I found myself in. It also made it difficult to comprehend how vicious and cruel mother nature can be out at sea for those men who were trying to make a living and lost their lives in the process.
