The Canal Latéral à la Loire is a canal running parallel to the Loire river to allow year long navigation because the Loire itself has a greatly varying depth and width depending on the rainfall. melting snow etc coming from the Massif Central.

These locks have the number 1 (not surprisingly) and have a drop of 3.90 meters as is shown on a plaque on the lock keeper's house.
