Stegosaurus means roof lizard, it was called this because when the fossils were first found scientists believed that its plates lay flat on its back like the tiles on a roof.
People used to believe that the Stegosaurus plates were used for defence or even controlling the dinosaurs body temperature. However it is now thought that the plates were only for display.
