This mural is near the original train depot in historic downtown Inverness, which has been converted into a lakeside park with picnic tables. An old caboose is displayed nearby.
Currently, this is the longest existing paved rail-trail in Florida. It spans 46 miles through an early-developed but still mostly rural part of the state from Citrus Springs (south of Dunnellon) in the north to Trilby (south of State Road 50) in the south. Its 46-mile length is entirely paved as it travels the Withlacoochee River valley through small towns, cattle ranches, wildlife management areas, and state forests. This trail will become part of the Central Florida Loop connection into the Cross Florida Greenway at Dunnellon sometime in the next five years. If you’re serious about riding this trail purchase a copy of the Withlacoochee State Trail Guide and Resource Book, sold by the nonprofit support organization Rails to Trails of the Withlacoochee. Surface: Asphalt mixed with crushed rubber from recycled tires; 12 feet wide. Location: Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco Counties.
