Paul Thomas Mann (* 6. Juni 1875 in Lübeck; † 12. August 1955 in Zürich) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, der 1933 in die Schweiz floh und 1938 in die USA emigrierte. Er zählt zu den bedeutendsten Erzählern deutscher Sprache im 20. Jahrhundert. Für seinen ersten Roman "Buddenbrooks: Verfall einer Familie" (1901) erhielt er 1929 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
Der Thomas-Mann-Stein steht an der Stelle des ehemals Mannschen Wohnhaus Breite Straße 38, in dem Thomas Mann und seine Geschwister ihre Kindheitsjahre verbrachten. Das Haus wurde nach dem Tod des Vaters 1891 verkauft und 1942 beim Luftangriff auf Lübeck im 2. Weltkrieg zerstört.
Das Denkmal in Form eines aufgeschlagenen Buches ist eine Stiftung der Landesbank Schleswig-Holstein zum 100. Geburtstag des Dichters. Es wurde 1975 von Ulrich Beier (1928-1981), einem norddeutschen Bildhauer, der in seiner Region eine beachtliche Reputation genoss, aus griechischem Marmor auf schwarzem Basalt geschaffen.

Paul Thomas Mann (* 6. June 1875 in Lübeck; † 12. August 1955 in Zürich) was a German writer, who fled to Switzerland in 1933 and emigrated to the USA in 1938 . He he's one the greatest storytellers of German language in the 20th Century. For his first novel "Buddenbrooks: Verfall einer Familie" (1901) he was awarded the 1929 Nobel Prize for Literature.
The Thomas-Mann-Stein stands on the site of the former Mann's house Breite Straße 38, in which Thomas Mann and his siblings spent their childhood years. The house was sold after the death of the father in 1891 and was destroyed 1942 during the bombing of Lübeck in WW II.
The monument in the form of an open book is a donation of the Landesbank Schleswig-Holstein to the 100th poet's birthday. Created in 1975 by Ulrich Beier (1928-1981), a North German sculptor with a considerable reputation in his region, it's made of Greek marble on black basalt.
