Elko has a tremendous amount of history for its size. Originally a stop on the California/Oregon/Humboldt Trail, then an important point on the Transcontinental Railroad, then terminus for the first official air mail flight in the US, just to name a few.
Ranching is an important part of everyday life around Elko and a large community of Basque shepherds call the Elko vicinity home.
