Uniformed World War I soldier. His upraised proper right arm holds a grenade. He wears a helmet, backpack, canteen and other paraphernalia. His proper left hand grips a rifle. At his feet are two small tree stumps wrapped in barbed wire.
(
visit link) sculpture honors those Chattooga Countians who served during World War I. The sculpture was funded by local residents and originally installed at Circle Park in Trion. In 1988, the sculpture was relocated to its current site outside the VFW memorial home, cleaned and rededicated. IAS files contain related excerpt from Robert S. Baker's "Chattooga County: The Story of a County & Its People," pg. 651 and newsclipping from the Summerville News, Nov. 10, 1988 and Nov. 17, 1988. The newsclippings list the names of the 475 veterans appearing on the memorial.
This one appears to have a small amount of the original barbed wire still wrapped around the tree stumps.
