"Roça" is the Portuguese designation for a colonial plantation and that's what Roça Monte Café used to be. After the independence of Sao Tome and Principe, in 1975, most of these plantations ceased to operate and became villages with a population living in poor conditions but surviving due to the generous nature around. Monte Café is one of the few plantations which actually is still operative, producing coffee (unlike most of the plantations in the country which produce cocoa) and being a model one, to where tourist operators bring their tours to show a working plantation.
