The VEVJ memorial has been relocated from busy Commercial Street to the re-landscaped Mariners Green which is also home to the Merchant Navy memorial. A peacfull plaza, where you can pause and remember those who gave so much.

"The memorial, commissioned to mark the 50th anniversary of victory in Europe and over Japan at the end of the Second World War, was originally laid in Commercial Street.

However, increasing traffic in that area had caused damage to the mosaic and it was decided to relocate it to Mariner’s Green.

Made out of polished and natural granite stones, the VEVJ landmark was created by artist Sebastien Boyesen. He also restored the memorial before it was placed in its new home.

Councillor Suller paid tribute to the men and women who gave so much during the Second World War.

“Although time marches on and the war becomes an even more distant memory, we must never forget their sacrifices," Text Source: (visit link)

"V-E Day stands for Victory in Europe Day, and V-J Day stands for Victory over Japan Day. After the German surrender, a treaty was signed in Reims, France, the headquarters of U.S. general Dwight D. Eisenhower. In the early hours of May 7, 1945, U.S. President Harry S Truman declared May 8 V-E Day, the end of World War II (1939–45) in Europe. Nevertheless, the war did not reach a final conclusion until the surrender of Japan on August 14, 1945. September 2, 1945, was declared the official V-J Day because Japan signed the terms of surrender on that date aboard the battleship USS Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay." (visit link)
