The plaque commemorates the building of the Trent Severn waterway between 1827 and 1920. This plaque is located at one of the most unique locks in the system. The Kirkfield liftlock, with a smaller lift than the Peterborough liftlock, operates on the same hydraulic piston system using the pressure of the river water to do the lifting.
