This colourful mural is one of three commissioned by the City of Pointe-Claire during its centenary celebrations (1911-2011). The mural, which is a painting by G. Scott MacLeod is located on the exterior wall of the Public Works Department at 50 avenue Terra Cotta, Pointe-Claire, QC H9R 5A4. The mural commemorates two significant milestones in the history of the City of Pointe-Claire.
First air show and first flight and the Brick yards which were open from 1912 to 1962 and which subsequently became
Terra Cotta Park The connection between these two seemingly unconnected events is the proximal location. Both the Brickyards and the air meet were located close to the site on which the mural now stands. During the first air meet, which was held in 1910, Jacques de Lesseps, set a record by flying his Blériot XI named Le Scarabée from Pointe-Claire over the City of Montreal and back. Lesseps in his aviator gear and his plane are depicted in the upper third of the mural. The Terra Cotta Brick Works as depicted in the lower two-thirds, were owned and operated by the Montreal Terra Cotta Co. The company, which employed 60 workers, extracted clay deposits and produced hollow, fireproof terra cotta tiles. Two kilns and workers as well as a black delivery truck can be seen in the mural. There is lots of free parking.
