[FR] Le musée a été créé en 1982 suite à la donation, en 1976, de nombreuses œuvres à la ville de Troyes par les grands collectionneurs et mécènes Pierre et Denise Lévy, industriels troyens du textile.

Inauguré en 1982 par le président de la République François Mitterrand, le musée est situé depuis cette date dans l'ancien palais épiscopal de Troyes des XVIe et XVIIe siècles.

Les collections rassemblent un panorama très complet de l’art en France, et en particulier de la peinture, depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle jusqu’aux années 1960. Mais, outre la peinture, les collections du musée comprennent aussi un fonds conséquent de sculptures.

De plus, des verreries art déco de Maurice Marinot ainsi qu'une importante collection d'art primitif, constituée de pièces ayant appartenu à certains artistes dont les œuvres sont présentées dans le musée (comme Derain) ou à de célèbres marchands amateurs (comme Ambroise Vollard, Félix Fénéon, Paul Guillaume…), viennent compléter les collections.

La collection de peintures comprend des œuvres d'Honoré Daumier, Félix Vallotton, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, de nabis comme Edouard Vuillard ou Pierre Bonnard, un ensemble remarquable d'œuvres d'artistes du mouvement fauve, avec André Derain (dont pas moins de 80 toiles sont présentées), Georges Braque, Maurice Vlaminck, Othon Friesz mais aussi de l’école de Paris avec Chaïm Soutine et Amedeo Modigliani ainsi que des toiles de Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Robert Delaunay, Juan Gris, Nicolas de Staël, Balthus ou encore Georges Rouault.

Opened in 1982, the Musée d'Art Moderne has on display one of the most important collections in France devoted to French art from the middle of the 19th century until the beginning of the 1960s.
In accordance with the donators’ wishes, the collection was handed over to the state for safe keeping in the city of Troyes, which is responsible for its administration.

It gives pride of place to canvases by Daumier, Courbet, Degas, Gaugin, Seurat, Vuilard and Denis, those from the Fauvist movement (one of the museum’s specialisations) with Derain, Vlaminck, Marinot, Braque, Van Dongen, Marquet, etc., as well as from the School of Paris, represented by Soutine and Modigliani, and an important collection of paintings by Derain that traces his entire career.
Other artists such as La Fresnaye, Dufresne, La Patellière, Chabaud, Metzinger, Mare, Dufy, Delaunay, Matisse, Rouault, de Staël and Balthus complete an outstanding collection spanning a hundred years of French painting.

A wonderful collection of Marinot’s glass (more than 140 pieces from 1912 to 1937) is the focal point of the decorative art display.
Primitive art, strongly represented by around a hundred works, some of which belonged to artists such as Derain or important dealers (Ambroise Vollard, Félix Fénéon, Paul Guillaume, etc.) sheds light on the relationship between Modern Art and African art, as intended by the donators.
