The Calgary Fire Department has over 1400 staff that in 2011 provided 100,695 responses to 50,520 incidents according to their annual report. Calls for emergency medical assistance was the number one response call accounting for 46% of the emergencies.
Calgary's fires department is nearly 126 years old. "Calgary's first fire captain was George Constantine, elected in the earliest days of the bucket brigade on August 25, 1885. But Constantine stepped down just a week into the job and was replaced by Steve Jarrett.
The official rank of chief was created on Nov. 1, 1886, and Jarrett served for the next five months before resigning. Frank Dick and E.R. Rodgers followed. Dick was reappointed in 1889, later passing the speaking trumpet — a megaphone-like device that was the official mark of office — to James Wilson and Hugh McClelland.
Calgary's most famous fire chief took the helm on March 21, 1898. Scottish-born James "Cappy" Smart cut his teeth in the fire business as a 20-year-old hookman for the early Calgary Hook, Ladder and Bucket Corps. He served an unprecedented 47-year career as a firefighter, holding the position of chief for 37 of those years, and went on to become one of the best-known and influential citizens of Calgary.
