The Grand Coulee Dam is all about big numbers: 12 million cubic yards of concrete, 6.8 million watts of electric power generation, 600,000 acres of farmland irrigation to name a few. When completed in 1942, it was the largest piece of concrete in the world. The lake created by this dam was named for then president Franklin D. Roosevelt and extends 151 miles to the Canadian border.

The stamp, issued in 1952, honors the 50th anniversary of the Bureau of Reclamation, a part of the Department of the Interior. It's primary focus was managing water projects in arid areas of the western United States. The Columbia River Project located in central Washington was its biggest and most ambitious project to date. The Grand Coulee Dam was the main feature of this project.
