This bridge is currently being used for regular traffic, although only on car can cross it (single lane). It was built in 1794, and there is a stone plaque by the middle of the bridge, facing the inner side.
This is the full inscription on the plaque:
"NO REINADO DA RAINHA D. MARIA I, NOSSA SENHORA, SENDO GOVERNADOR E CAPITÃO GENERAL DESTE REINO DO ALGARVE O CONDE DE VALE DE REIS, NUNO JOSÉ DE MENDONÇA, DO CONSELHO DE SUA MAGESTADE, GENTIL-HOMEM DA CÂMARA DO PRÍNCIPE NOSSO SENHOR, DEPUTADO DA JUNTA DOS TRÊS ESTADOS, MANDOU CONSTRUIR ESTA PONTE POR ORDEM DA MESMA SENHORA, NO ANO DE 1794."
Summarizing, it says it was during the kingdom of Dona Maria I, being governor of Algarve the count of Vale de Reins, Nuno José de Mendonça, who ordered this bridge to be built in 1794.
Apparently a bridge existed in the same spot, a long tome before this one. The first bridge might had been built by the Romans or by the Arabs.
