A painting of Jonathan Lowrie is slashed in the museum at Aspen Tallow. Barnaby and Troy go to investigate and find an innocuous packet of smoked mackerel in the churchyard. Troy is dismissive of the mackerel but Barnaby thinks it is a vital clue.

Local artist Sandra McKillop is hired to repair the painting and starts to believe that the museum is haunted. A bust moves and shatters on the floor and a packing case catches fire, both of which spook Sandra. Meanwhile the museum curator, Alan Bradford, is assaulted in the museum and Marcus Lowrie, a direct descendant of John Lowrie, is found murdered in the opened grave of John Lowrie in the museum.

Marcus Lowrie had been convinced that John Lowrie’s treasure was in the grave and had disturbed someone else investigating the grave. The curator comes under suspicion as he had been using a metal detector on the grave shortly before the murder.

Whilst in the museum Barnaby smells fish and asks if there is a cellar to the museum. When he investigates the cellar a man hits Barnaby and escapes. Barnaby wants to see Ralph Bailey, the museum’s director, but he has disappeared and his house shows signs of a struggle. Cuttings that Barnaby finds at the house indicate Ralph Bailey has changed his name and that he is a wanted bank robber.

Sandra continues to work in the museum and sees words projected onto the museum wall which spooks her again. The words are ones that Sandra’s mentor, Linda Marquis, has told Sandra to take as her mantra, following the death of her husband David. Barnaby decides to interview Linda, but when he gets to her house he finds Charles McKillop, Sandra’s brother in law leaving. Barnaby correctly deduces that Charles is Linda’s lover.

Investigations into Linda’s background show that she is a former drug addict. It is also apparent that Sandra is a co partner in business with Charles McKillop. Barnaby correctly deduces that Sandra has been drugged by Linda so that she and Charles can gain control of the company. Barnaby arrests the pair.

At the funeral of Marcus Lowrie, Ralph Bailey’s body is found in the grave trench. Ralph’s killer is found after Barnaby discovers that a lady friend of Ralph had been buying mackerel. Apparently she was in collusion with the murderer and had been taking him mackerel to the museum cellar. Ralph had been the banker for the robbery and the murderer had been looking for the money.

Ralph’s murderer and Charles McKillop refuse to talk to Barnaby so he threatens to frame the pair. Ralph’s murderer tells Barnaby that Charles clubbed Marcus Lowrie to death with a projector Charles was trying to install to frighten Sandra. Fortunately Troy manages to find the projector in the skip and Barnaby solves two murders successfully.
