Bethany Cemetery is the final resting place for approximately 4200 folks. This is a very nice cemetery with paved driveways throughout.
We did find quite a few centenarians at this location. Perhaps it IS something in the water - or perhaps it is the clean living of the people in Bethany, which is a center for the Nazarene Church.
Florida French's headstone is a flat gray granite marker. At the center top is an engraving of a rose. The lighter-colored open Bible contains her inscription which reads:
Florida M. French
Mar. 18, 1893
May 4, 1996
Our Storybook Grandmother
Makes you wonder what her characteristics were that make her family describe her as a Storybook Grandmother. She must have been a really sweet lady.
* Florida was born the same year Harriet Potter wrote about Peter Rabbit. I imagine she was raised on these stories.
* The Wizard of Oz premiered in New York City when Florida was ten.
* The first prize was put in a Cracker Jack box the year Florida turned twenty.
* She was 32 the year John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution in a Tennessee school.
* Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of Britain when Florida was 47.
* She was 60 the year Dr. Jones Salk found the vaccine for polio.
* The Vietnam War ended the year Florida was eighty.
* She was 99 the year McDonald's opened its first fast-food restaurant in China.
