First placing a barge on a rail car, the Allegheny Portage Railroad, then used a series of fixed engine house to first pull the barge up one side of the Allegheny Mountains and then lower it down the other side.

First placing a barge on a rail car, the Allegheny Portage Railroad, then used a series of fixed engine house to first pull the barge up one side of the Allegheny Mountains and then lower it down the other side. This portage linked the eastern and western Pennsylvania canal systems.
