This tree is located on the University of Oregon campus near the geology buildings. A plaque near the base of this tree reads:

Metasequoia glypstroboides
(Dawn Redwood)

Previously known only from fossil record, the
metasequoia was rediscovered in China around 1945.
This tree, planted a few years later, is one of two
on the University of Oregon campus from the
original stock to leave China. A rare deciduous
conifer, it loses its needles each fall.

Plaque created in memory of
Wendy Lynn Ebersole
Dept. of Geological Sciences - 1997
