When the Portuguese navigators João de Santarém, Pêro Escobar and João de Paiva found the island of São Tomé in 1471, there was no sign of human presence. Both islands, São Tomé and Principe, were deserted.
It was in this location that the Portuguese arrived and there they founded the first settlement, which prospered for some decades, before the newcomers had moved to what is now the capital of the country: São Tomé city.
The place is known as Anambó and during the last decades of the colonial times it was a popular gathering location, where Europeans would meet for a grill and picnics on the weekends.
Nowadays an almost empty square has a monument - a replica of the stone pole Portuguese used to mark their discoverers - and some falling buildings from the pre-independence times.
