The Lochsa River originates near Powell, Idaho in the Bitterroot Mountains at the confluence of Crooked Fork and Colt Killed Creek. It flows for about 70 miles to the southwest to Lowell, Idaho where it is joined by the Selway River to form the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River.
The Selway River also originates in the Bitterroot Mountains and flows for about 100 miles to join the Lochsa River at Lowell. From Lowell the Middle Fork flows about 23 miles to Kooskia, Idaho where it is joined by the South Fork to become the Clearwater River. The Clearwater then flows another 75 miles to Lewiston, Idaho where it joins the Snake River.
The confluence is easily reached from U.S. Hwy 12 and there is a turnout with interpretive signs a tenth of a mile downstream.
