The fort of São Sebastião, also known as the fort of São Tomé, was built by the Portuguese in 1575. In 1866 a lighthouse was installed on it. The fort was renovated in the late 50's and then, again, already after the independence, in 1994.
In the last years of Portuguese presence (and since 1960) it was used the the headquarters of the Naval Defense of the territory.
Nowadays it hosts the National Museum of São Tomé e Principe. There are about eight rooms with exhibits.
It's one of the most important landmarks of the capital and well worth a visit.
