Brugge (Bruges in English), known as the Venice of the North, has a number of canals and is also low lying.
The building behind the bridge was vital in helping to control the level of the canals and prevent flooding. These days the bridge marks the limit of navigation on the canal.
The date markers on the bridge are in 2 pieces. On the left hand side of the bridge is the word ANNO, and on the right the date 1895.
The date is easier to see from a boat but it can be seen as you approach the bridge on foot alongside the canal, as I did when I took the picture.
Date built or dedicated as indicated on the date stone or plaque.: 1895
Date stone, plaque location.: On the side of the bridge on the water side.
Road, body of water, land feature, etc. that the bridge spans.: Minnewater
