When traveling the historic National Trails Highway/Route 66 through southeastern California, there are lots of interesting things to see including many trains of a mile or more in length making their way between Needles and Barstow. And since the old highway largely parallels the BNSF mainline through this area there are many places where you can stop and observe the action. The small town of Amboy is particularly nice because there is lots of parking in numerous locations, a convenience store and gas station, plus a motel and diner (which may or may not be open) to satisfy just about all your needs.
