The south east side of the larger 10×13 km caldera contains a caldera lake. The inner 7.5-kilometer-wide caldera, which was formed during emplacement of the Bali ignimbrite, has been dated at about 23,670 and 28,500 years ago. The Batur caldera is one of the finest caldera in the world.
Mount Batur has erupted at least 22 times since the 1800's with the major eruptions beeing in 1917, 1926 and 1963. The substantial lava field from the 1968 eruption is visible today when viewed from Kintamani, a town that stradles the south-west ridge of the greater caldera.
Batur is a popular trekking mountain among tourists, as its peak offers spectacular views and is easily accessible. A guided pre-dawn hike to the lava dome for sunrise is available.
