This orientation table is on the summit of Ben Lomond. Ben Lomond is located approximately 4 km northwest of Queenstown and is the dominating mountain viewed from town. The mountain has a height of 1748 meters (5735 feet). The peak can be accessed from tracks started down in town (Powerhouse Track car park elevation 1317 feet)) or from the top of the Skyline Gondola. Taking the Skyline Gondola will shorten the round trip by two hours. The Powerhouse Track route starts down near the lake and progresses on a steep track through a beautiful pine forest much located along a fast moving stream with two waterfalls. Once above tree line the track joins the track from the gondola. The track proceeds steadily up to the Ben Lomond saddle (elevation 4311 feet) From the saddle great views are afforded. From the saddle the track to the summit is gets steeper the closer one gets to the summit. During the summer the track will be snow free however in the spring (which it is now), fall and winter deep snow will be encountered. On my track knee deep snow was encountered on final approach to the summit. The summit offers great 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains, Queenstown, and Lake Wakatipu. On the summit is a orientation table with a sighting ring to help identify the surrounding peaks.

The hike up to this orientation table is a full day strenuous hike.
