Employing a very efficient use of concrete and steel gives the piers supporting the Kinnaird Bridge a very fragile appearance. Instead of solid, massive piers, the designers split each one into a triple Vee, each pier consisting of six individual elements.
The bridge gets its name from the town of Kinnaird, in which it stood until January 1, 1974, when Kinnaird was absorbed by the town of Castlegar, the two towns together becoming the City of Castlegar.
The bridge was completed in 1960 and dedicated by the Hon. P. A. Gaglardi, Minister of Highways, in 1965. It has a total span of approximately 300 metres and stands about 20 metres above the Columbia. It was designed by Choukalos, Woodburn, McKenzie, Maranda Ltd. of Vancouver BC and built by Northern Construction Co. and J. W. Srewart Ltd.
