The historic Colfax Train Station, now serving Amtrak riders, is a great place to watch trains go by (or stop for passengers).

In addition to the Amtrak California Zephyr which passes through here daily, this is the old Southern Pacific (now part of Union Pacific) mainline over Donner Pass between Reno and Sacramento. Trains pulling the grade are moving at a pace that allows leisurely observation of the activity.
There is plenty of shade at the depot and lots of opportunities for food and drink a short distance away in downtown Colfax. And there is a heritage museum in the depot building to provide alternative entertainment during the short periods when no trains are passing.
