Troy Smith opened the first prototype of today's drive-in in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1953 and called it Top hat. The name was changed in 1959 to Sonic. There are over 3500 Sonic drive-ins in 43 states, serving more than three million customers per day. Sonic currently calls itself "America's Drive-in." Their national headquarters are in Oklahoma City, in a entertainment district known as Bricktown.
Their website (

At some of the Sonic's, your carhop will arrive on roller skates. The Sonic Corporation is active in community affairs, sponsoring many local activities with focus on educational opportunities for youth.
There are five Sonic locations in Edmond. We have highlighted the one at 306 W. Covell. The history and activities of Sonic can be found on this Wikipedia site: (
