The bronze statue of Misty is located on the west side of Main Street next to the sidewalk in downtown Chincoteague.
Author Margaret Henry stayed at a bed and breakfast on Main Street north of here (across from the post office) and wrote a book in 1947 about a real-life pony named Misty that lead to a series of books and a movie. Henry took Misty home to Wayne, Illinois, then returned her to Chincoteague before Misty died in 1972 at about 26 years old.
Misty was preserved by a taxidermist and can be seen at The Chincoteague Island Museum on Maddox Boulevard across from McDonalds.
Misty's hoof prints are cast in the sidewalk in front of the Island Theatre box office down the street.
Island gift stores still sell copies of Henry's books and the movie.
