Dundy County lies in southwestern Nebraska, bordering Kansas and Colorado. The town of Benkelman won the county seat in 1884 and, in 1921, this building was constructed to replace the original aging courthouse. The structure is an example of the County Citadel type, featuring a "rectangular shape, centered entrance, costly materials, distinctive ornamentation... and impression of a government building representing modernity, simplicity, strength, and prosperity."
