On Christmas Eve 1895, Russian-Finnish steamship Palme on route from Liverpool to South America got out of control in a storm near Kingstown (now: Dun Laoghaire) harbor and signalled for help. Several attempts to rescue the Palme crew failed and two of the lifeboats sent to its help were capsized by big waves. The crew of Hannah Pickard lifeboat managed to survive but the complete crew of lifeboat Civil Service No. 7 has drowned.
Two days later, SS Palme crew was saved, and the bodies of lifeboat men were found. They were buried in Dun Laoghaire cemetery and a fund for their dependants was created, with donations from Finland and Russia.
Every Christmas Eve there is a remembrance event in Dun Laoghaire harbor in memory of this largest single lifeboat disaster in Ireland.
