This Grade II listed road bridge was built in 1830 on the main road north out of Alston towards Carlisle. It spans the Gilderdale Burn which forms the county boudary between Cumbria and Northumbria. The burn empties into the River South Tyne about 0.6km further downstream.
The bridge is single spanned, built of coursed, squared rubble with flat copings. The curved lead-ups have low end piers with chamfered capstones. The single, tall, segmental arch has pilaster buttresses to either side and there is a panel to the centre of each parapet on the inner face with the dated inscription: 'This BRIDGE was Built BY THE Counties of Northumberland & Cumberland 1830.' The eastern parapet also carries the inscription 'GILDERDALE BRIDGE' on a panel to the south of the date panel.
