The Grave site of James McElwee in McElwee Cemetery, Pike County Missouri, between Bowling Green MO and Louisiana MO off of UU. He was captured during the war and held as a prisoner by the British.

The grave is in a cemetery that is now part of the Lay Center for Education & the Arts Sculpture Park.

I found the following information at (visit link)

"He was born on Aug. 19,1758 in Brunswick County, Virginia. (His father was William McElwee and his mother was Janet Black. They were married in York County, Pennsylvania in 1757). James was one of nine children. He married Rhoda Black in 1793. She died August 22, 1848 at the age of 72. Sometimes you will see his name written Rev. James McElwee and this means that he was a Revolutionary War soldier and not a reverend.(The reverend in this family is Rev Willaim Meek McElwee but tht's another story). On October 7, 1780, the battle of Kings Mountain was fought. The battle took place 2 miles from the McElwee homestead. James W. McElwee was home at the time but did not fight in the battle as he was recuperating from a foot injury in a previous battle. James McElwees brothers, William McElwee III and John McElwee, along with their father William McElwee II did fight at Kings Mountain. James W. McElwee was captured and held prisoner on a British prisoner ship in Savannah, Georgia. In 1832 James moved to Pike County, Missouri where he settled on 165 acres of land halfway between Louisianna and Bowling Green. His war record is at U.S. Pensions Bureau of Pike County, Missouri 1832 File #W9553- National Archives, Washington, D.C. Jmaes had a son James Darby McElwee who married Mary Mills Jan 3, 1833 in Pike Co. Missouri...."
