Bridgeport is more known for its history as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route (1857-1861) and early coal mining (1880-1940) which brought the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific RR to town (1892).
Of course Native Americans were here too. Is this totem pole an acknowledgement of their history and role in Bridgeport, was it a gift to the community, or it is merely an interesting sculpture in Harwood Park?
Whatever the story of this totem pole is, its craftsmanship is excellent. It is definitely worth a short walk over to appreciate it up close.
