The Thames Barrier is a movable flood barrier that protects central London from flooding should the 'wrong' climatic situation arise. The barrier spans the Thames at Woolwich Reach on an east/west section of the River Thames.

The Thames Barrier can be approached from either side of the river during the hours of darkness. However, some areas may be restricted and completely closed to the general public especially in the vicinity of the control centre.

The co-ordinates given are from where the photo was taken on the south side of the river. There is a riverside footpath and cycle track that is accessible 24 hours a day. The parking co-ordinates given are close to this location and currently there are no parking restrictions in this area but parking can be very difficult if Charlton Athletic football team are playing at home.

The barrier looks splendid by day but comes into its own at night. If planning a visit try and establish if any cruise ships will be passing through the barrier as that will enhance your night photo. The Port of London Authority carry a list of cruise ship arrivals and departures with any bound for the Pool of London or Greenwich needing to pass through the barrier.

The variable 'Best viewing times' has been left blank as the seasons dictate when the hours of darkness will be. In winter is is dark from about 1600-0800hrs and in summer from 2200hrs to 0400hrs.
