Forest Service history about 12 miles south of Lost Pass along U.S. Hwy. 93.
Text of Sign: Sept. 2, 1805 Lewis and Clark proceeded with much difficulty, up the North Fork, the camped on the west side of the river in this vicinity.
Clark wrote “. . . we were obliged to cut a road, over rocky hill Slides where our horses were in peteal danger of Slipping to their certain distruction & up & Down Steep hills, where Several horses fell, Some turned over, and other Sliped down Steep hill Sides, one horse Crippled & 2 gave out.”
