The 150 years of Friedsburg was celebrated Saturday Sept 30, 2010 by an estimated 5,000 people, coming from as far away as Barrie, Milton, Toronto and Michigan. Descendants of the Fried family, who founded Friedsburg in 1860 (the name was changed to Dashwood in 1871) were even on hand for the event. Considering the population of the town is about 400 residents, that is an impressive number. The daylong event included numerous activities for those of all ages, starting with the fireman's pancake breakfast in the morning and wrapping up at 1 a.m. with The River Junction Band. Events included a historical display in the Dashwood Community Centre, children's games and rides, and antique car show, a Rock Band competition, tug-of-war, arm wrestling, several musical acts, a craft show and food.
The monument that houses the commemorative plaque is made from stone and bricks from homes and buildings from the Dashwood (Friedsburg) area. The log and saw represent Friedsburgs beginnings, when the first saw mill was erected in 1853 followed by a grist mill. The town still has many buildings from its early years including a blacksmith shop and store fronts on Dashwood Rd.
