This sculpture is part of the Massacre Canyon Battlefield Memorial (which also includes an information center and stone monument) and depicts an Indian on horseback chasing a buffalo. The Massacre Canyon Battle took place in 1873 when a group of Sioux warriors attacked the Pawnee tribe during their winter buffalo hunt. It was one of the last large-scale Native American battles in the United States. According to the nearby historical marker, the battle occurred "when a Pawnee hunting party of about 700... were surprised by a War Party of Sioux. The Pawnee, badly outnumbered and completely surprised, retreated into the head of the canyon about two miles northwest". After their defeat, the Pawnee decided to move to a reservation in Oklahoma.
