Located on US 56 ENE of Montezuma, KS, the Gray County Wind Farm or FPL Gray County Energy Center was the first large commercial wind farm in Kansas producing 112.2 megawatts (as of 2006) through 170 Vesta 660-kilowatt turbines located on 20 acres of prairie.
Construction started in June 2001 and it started producing viable energy by November of that year.
The turbines weigh 209 tons (base to blades) and at its highest point is 30 stories tall. Each blade is 70 feet long and spins at 28.5 revolutions per minute. And as the virtual cache located here alludes, everyone knows its windy.
